Berzinc refit: Modern automation for a classic yacht

The motor yacht Berzinc recently received a full automation refit carried out by Marble Automation. The project focused on updating the yacht’s PLC installation and control systems to meet modern standards.

Berzinc was originally built in 1977 and underwent an exterior refit in 2022. With a length of 45 meters, the yacht required a complete and reliable automation setup to support daily operations, monitoring, and safety functions. The commissioning and testing of the new system were performed in Phuket, Thailand.

Marble Automation provided a custom alarm monitoring and control system designed to integrate several key functions on board into one clear platform.

The system includes:

  • Configurable alarm system
  • Tank level readings
  • MS225 unit for navigation light control
  • Interior lighting control
  • Engine and power overview
  • UMS (Unmanned Machinery Space) functions
  • Door and window security monitoring
  • System pages for hydraulics, pumps, anchor, and boilers
  • PLC and Remote I/O visualization

The new installation offers a complete overview of all vital systems. Alarms can be configured according to vessel requirements, while the visualization pages give the crew clear insight into the status of technical systems throughout the yacht. The layout was designed for straightforward operation, following the familiar structure used in other Marble Automation projects.

During commissioning in Phuket, Marble Automation carried out functional testing, fine-tuning, and crew instruction. Remote access was set up for future support and monitoring. This allows for quick assistance in case of system updates or troubleshooting while the yacht is in operation.

The upgrade brings Berzinc’s automation system in line with modern standards and ensures compatibility for future extensions. The refit also provides better integration between different onboard systems such as lighting, hydraulics, and security. With the new PLC installation, all systems can be monitored and controlled from a single user interface.

The project once again shows how existing vessels can benefit from modern automation without losing their original character. For a yacht built in 1977, the new PLC system provides the kind of control and functionality expected on much newer vessels.

Marble Automation worked closely with the yacht’s technical management to ensure a smooth transition from the old system. All work was completed and tested on site before the yacht resumed service.

With this refit completed, Berzinc is now operating with a clear and modern alarm and monitoring setup that supports safe and controlled operation under all conditions.
